David Haye vs John Ruiz - Fight Report

David Haye retained the WBA Heavyweight title against John Ruiz at the M.E.N arena in Manchester with a stoppage in the ninth round.

The aggressive and agile Haye dominated the early rounds and landed excellent body combinations which had Ruiz confused and unable to respond to what amounted to an endless barrage of hooks and uppercuts from Haye much to the delight of the 18,000 in attendance.

Ruiz deployed effective counter punching yet didn’t have the power to rock Haye and ultimately led to his downfall by coming forward to press the action only to get sent to the floor on numerous occasions.

Ruiz was knocked down twice in the first round, which saw Haye getting a point deducted for a rabbit punch to Ruiz.

The time of the stoppage was 2.01 in round 9 in which Ruiz's corner saw him unfit to continue and threw in the towel to halt the bout.

Their clash at Bolton Arena on October 23 is the most eagerly awaited domestic clash of 2009.
