David Haye retained the WBA Heavyweight title against John Ruiz at the M.E.N arena in Manchester with a stoppage in the ninth round.
The aggressive and agile Haye dominated the early rounds and landed excellent body combinations which had Ruiz confused and unable to respond to what amounted to an endless barrage of hooks and uppercuts from Haye much to the delight of the 18,000 in attendance.
Ruiz deployed effective counter punching yet didn’t have the power to rock Haye and ultimately led to his downfall by coming forward to press the action only to get sent to the floor on numerous occasions.
Ruiz was knocked down twice in the first round, which saw Haye getting a point deducted for a rabbit punch to Ruiz.
The time of the stoppage was 2.01 in round 9 in which Ruiz's corner saw him unfit to continue and threw in the towel to halt the bout.
David Haye is already looking beyond Saturday's first defense of his WBA heavyweight title against John Ruiz to a unification bout with either of the Klitschko brothers.
Discussions have begun about staging a unification fight in the Gulf against either Vitali or Wladimir Klitschko, who between them hold the WBC, IBF and minor WBO titles.
"It's something we have talked about with Adam Booth," Haye said, referring to his trainer and manager. "There has not been a big title fight in the Middle East. A heavyweight title fight is the biggest you can get. It would be huge for putting [a country like] Abu Dhabi on the map.
"Look what the 'Rumble in the Jungle' did for Zaire. No one ever heard of Zaire until then. After Muhammad Ali fought George Foreman for the title, no one forgets it."
WBA heavyweight champion David Haye and challenger John Ruiz took to the scales this afternoon ahead of their title showdown in Manchester, England tomorrow night. The fight is being broadcast live in the UK on Sky Box Office.
Renowned for his exploits in the boxing ring, Britain’s world heavyweight champion David ‘The Hayemaker’ Haye has recently discovered that the pen is every bit as mighty as the sword – or glove.
The current WBA world heavyweight king has put his name and distinctive touch to HAYEMAKER MAGAZINE, a commemorative, 192-page, glossy sports magazine, to be released on Saturday, April 3rd.
Fight fans can get their hands on the exclusive magazine at the Manchester Evening News (M.E.N) Arena, moments before Haye steps into the ring to defend his belt against mandatory challenger John Ruiz.
Commonwealth light-welterweight champion Ajose Olusegan will defend his title against former European titleholder Colin Lynes in Manchester on Saturday, April 3rd. The scheduled 12-round contest will act as one of the chief-support attractions to David Haye’s WBA world heavyweight title showdown against John Ruiz, televised live and exclusively on Sky Box Office.
Olusegan and Lynes agreed to meet at the Manchester Evening News Arena, following an injury withdrawal by Scotland’s Lee McAllister. ‘The Aberdeen Assassin’s proposed Commonwealth lightweight title bout with Ben Murphy has since been cancelled.
Light-welterweight champion Olusegan remains one of the most dangerous and avoided campaigners in the British Isles. Originally born in Lagos, Nigeria, Olusegan has competed professionally in Britain since May 2001 and now holds British citizenship. He is unbeaten in 27 professional contests and has ended 13 of his bouts via stoppage.
David Haye will make the first defense of his WBA world heavyweight title against John Ruiz in Manchester on April 3.
The 29-year-old British fighter, also a former world cruiserweight champion, won the heavyweight crown from Russia's Nikolai Valuev in November.
Haye will now face Ruiz, the WBA's No. 1 contender, at Manchester's MEN Arena.
"I'm looking forward to getting back to what I do best -- throwing my trademark 'Hayemakers," Haye said Tuesday. "Ruiz is a come-forward fighter so I aim to get at him, break him down, and take him out in good style."
David Haye defeated Nikolai Valuev over twelve hard fought rounds to become the WBA Heavyweight champion in Nuremberg Germany
The judges scored the fight 114-14, 116-112,116-12.
David Haye becomes the 7th British Heavyweight champion and the first since Lennox Lewis in 2003 and will fight John Ruiz early next year in London.
