Matthew Hatton finally stepped out of the shadow of older brother Ricky by claiming the vacant European Welterweight title in a hard fought win in Dagenham.

Hatton won a unanimous decision against highly rated veteran Gianluca Branco. The fight at the Goresbrook leisure centre was the main event on a night which saw Hatton make the jump with a professional and clinical performance. The three judges at ringside scoring it 117-113,115-113 and 116-112.

Buoyed on by older brother Ricky at ringside, Matthew went to work on the Italian whose only defeats came at the hands of Arturo Gatti and Miguel Cotto. Hatton showed his craft around the ring, constantly forcing the Italian to miss and using sustained aggression to win the scrappier rounds. Hatton (39-4-2) controlled the early rounds and made few mistakes. He did allow himself to walk onto a stinging left jab from Branco (43-3-1), but regrouped well.  Some very cagey middle rounds saw the momentum swing both ways and had its fair share of close rounds. But all the good clean work came from the impressive Hatton whose work rate and desire never diminished.

He Would’ve Been a Contender

The words ‘nice guy’ or ‘top bloke’ were always the ones that jumped out when speaking about Darren Sutherland. The Irish bronze medal winner was that type of man that made him a people’s person, and for what it’s worth I thought that he could’ve been the people’s champion.
